Buzzi Connect: Cloud-Native Connectivity for Industrial Machinery.

The Challenge

Buzzi SRL is an Italian manufacturing company specializing in the design and production of high-frequency welding machinery. The company offers a full range of solutions — standard welders, rotary table welders, weld-and-cut machines — with a strong emphasis on customization: every machine can be configured to the customer's specific requirements. Buzzi SRL stands out for its build quality, innovation focus with an eye on Industry 5.0, and commitment to sustainability through green technologies.

Buzzi machines are equipped with digital boards and advanced electronic control systems ensuring precision and reliability. However, like many professional-grade industrial machines, they are not built with cloud-native integrations. This means each machine operates as a standalone unit: perfectly functional, but isolated. In a market increasingly oriented towards Industry 4.0 paradigms, Buzzi's customers — manufacturing companies across various sectors — were demanding capabilities that the machines, as designed, could not natively offer.

The requests were clear and pressing: the ability to monitor and control machines remotely without being physically at the control panel; the capacity to integrate production data into their own management systems (MES, ERP) for a unified plant view; access to advanced diagnostics to optimize processes and prevent downtime. An even more complex challenge was the need to coordinate multiple Buzzi machines in the same plant, managing them as an integrated ecosystem rather than separate units.

The strategic question for Buzzi SRL was: how to add a connectivity and intelligence layer to their machines, transforming them from excellent standalone products into solutions fully compatible with modern industry requirements — without redesigning the hardware from scratch?

The Solution

We developed Buzzi Connect, a web-based application serving as a centralized connectivity and control platform for Buzzi machinery. The software is the missing "connected brain": it interfaces with the machines' digital boards and brings them into the cloud-ready Industry 4.0 ecosystem.

Architecture and Integration

Buzzi Connect is installed on-premise at Buzzi customers' facilities, on a dedicated server or industrial device. The software implements libraries for machine communication via the Modbus TCP/IP protocol — a widely adopted industrial standard for PLC and machine control system communication. This technology choice ensures compatibility with all Buzzi configurations and ease of integration without hardware modifications.

Centralized Control Interface

Buzzi Connect's web interface provides operators with a modern, intuitive control panel accessible from any network-connected device (PC, tablet, smartphone). From this interface, users can:

• View every machine's real-time status: operational parameters, production statistics, and alarms.

• Remotely control machinery: modify processing parameters, start and stop production cycles, and quickly intervene in case of anomalies.

• Coordinate multiple machines in the same facility, managing them as an integrated ecosystem from a single dashboard.

Data Historization and Integration

The system automatically collects and historizes production data, making it available for analysis and export to the customer's management systems (MES, ERP). This enables tracking machine performance over time, identifying trends, optimizing production processes, and generating advanced reports. Full Industry 4.0 compliance also opens the possibility for customers to access tax incentives and government digitalization grants.

Data Security

Security was designed for the industrial context and on-premise deployment specifics:

• Segmented network architecture isolating machinery control traffic from the general corporate network, reducing the attack surface.

• HTTPS-encrypted communications for all web interface interactions, even in local environments.

• Robust authentication with individual credentials, secure password policies, and integration with enterprise identity management systems (LDAP/Active Directory).

• Role-based access control (RBAC) with differentiated permissions for operators, maintenance personnel, and administrators.

• Complete logging of all control operations for traceability and forensic analysis support.

• On-premise data: sensitive production data remains within the customer's corporate perimeter, without transiting through external clouds.
